EngageNow makes it easier community members to participate in their government engagement opportunities.
Civic engagement is important but time-consuming, and community members need an easier way to keep track of everything.
I conducted secondary qualitative and quantitative research on user needs for increasing their civic engagement. I also conducted a competitive audit to understand unaddressed gaps in the products currently on the market.
Users wanted an easier way to keep track of everything.
Users wanted to find engagement opportunities that work for their schedule.
Users like to keep track of developments on local initiatives.
Users only want to focus on what matters most to them.
Based on research, I created three personas and accompanying user journey maps. The user journey map helped me put myself in the perspective of the user persona and identity the emotions of using the product. This helped inform my product design.
With user research conducted and personas established, I created the following problem statement to workshop:
Laura is a busy individual who wants to be civically engaged, but struggles to keep track of all the different opportunities that she hears about from different sources.
Sketching various wireframes on paper helped me experiment with the placement of various elements and inform the overall design of the interface.
I incorporated elements from the paper wireframe to inform the homepage design, including quick access to view favorites and browse local agencies and initiatives.
I conducted an unmoderated usability study to identify design changes that can help users complete their task of finding and organizing engagement opportunities.
Findings
The call to action for browsing local agencies and initiatives was too much.
Accepting filtered view preferences was unclear.
Citizen engagement is multifaceted and very broad. Having a robust tool to meet user needs in a diverse array of contexts can greatly improve how people stay engaged.
Throughout this process, I learned how consistent and intuitive interactions can make or break the user flow.
To continue this project, I would:
CurEx: an app and a responsive website for global travelers to easily find up-to-date currency exchange rates, as well as easily find options to exchange currencies online or in-person.
